South Limburg's Climate Change Strategy

 

Limburg is the oldest destination of the Netherlands. We lived though every phase of tourism, also mass summer tourism, and turned ourselves into a succesfull year round destination. To survive in future we are very much involved in sustainable tourism, as we think it is one of the only ways to take our sector to the next phase of tourism, which is built on quality and sustainable working. Our passion for sustainable tourism is one of the reasons we take part in the ETIS programme. With Amsterdam we are the only region in the Netherlands to do so.

→ Precipitations : uncertain, -5-10% in summer

→ Snowing days (1’500-2’500m) : 70/year → 50/year

What is the importance of Cruise Tourism in your Region?

Since 1997 when the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum was opened, the number of cruise liners arriving at Euskadi has increased year after year. The Port of Bilbao is the main docking point for cruise liners in Euskadi, although Pasajes also receives the occasional small cruiser.

Context: Odyssea Blue Tourism, bound for Cruise operators

Odyssea is an Ecotourism Network of Blue Routes and Green Routes along water around Port cities (70 port cities, in 9 countries and 16 Mediterranean and European regions).

The goal of the network is to structure a new thematic tourism in Europe: Blue Tourism. A thematic recognized by a collective mark. A concrete way to promote together original ecotourism offers that guarantee more attractivity for engaged maritime and river destinations, a best competitiveness and jobs creation.
